Corridor
Patrick Jolley
2009, 16mm transferred to HD, colour, sound, 7 mins
The camera moves through a seemingly endless system of corridors populated not by humans but by monkeys, creatures to whom we are closely related. Yet monkeys remain by choice in the natural world, they have not created a ‘built’ world to inhabit. By choosing this juxtaposition of environmental relentlessness and the supple movement of animal bodies, Jolley suggests alienation and isolation. Though the corridors could be those of a hotel, there is the suggestion that we have built ourselves prisons.
